Memories of Friedrich von Pourtales, the German ambassador to Russia, of the latest talks in St. Petersburg in 1914. From 1879 till 1899 he held various positions in Vienna, Prague, Paris, St.Petersburg and in the office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In October 1907 he was appointed an ambassador to St. Petersburg, where he tried to prevent a rapprochement between Russia and France and Great Britain. On July 19 in 1914, he presented to Sazonov, Russian Foreign Minister, a note declaring war Germany to Russia. Cover illustration by D Mitrohin, Russian artist, book illustrator and historian of art.
