"Chimes" was a literary and art magazine published in Riga from 1925 to 1929 under the editorship of businessman and enlightener Sergei Alexandrovich Belotsvetov. The author of the coloured stylised cover of The Chimes was Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. In essence, the magazine was a family weekly collective reading, sustained in the best traditions of the pre-revolutionary way of life. The editors of the magazine paid special attention to its artistic appearance. Such renowned Russian artists as Sergey Vinogradov, the famous landscape painter Nikolai Petrovich Bogdanov-Belsky, as well as the Russian graphic artist and theatre artist Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky, a member of the St. Petersburg art association, have done a lot to raise the artistic level of Chimes. Thanks to these three artists, images of patriarchal Slavic nature, as well as graphic images of elements of Russian antiquity, which was emphasized in the magazine, constantly appeared. Tipped-in illustrations throughout the magazine. Fair condition. Rubbings, staining. Slightly frayed cover and pages.
