The publication is a catalogue of the exhibition that took place in The State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg in 2004. The exhibition covers the works of Russian photographers from the collections of Switzerland. The articles by art historians included in the publication are dedicated to the problem of the perception of photography in Russia at the end of the 19th - the first half of the 20th century. Chronologically, the exhibition begins with the works of the oldest Russian photographer Dmitri Yermakov and features other famous artists, such as Alexander Rodchenko, Stenberg Brothers, Nikolai Denisovsky, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky, Nikolai Sidelnikov, Solomon Telingater, illustrated with the examples of their photographs and photomontage.
