How We Saved the SS Chelyuskin by Otto Yulievich Schmidt, Ilya Leonidovich Baevsky and Lev Zakharovich Mekhlis. The book shares an insider's perspective on the epic of the Soviet steamship SS Chelyuskin, which set out to the Arctic in 1933 in order to research the which vessels would be able to travel the Northern maritime route along Siberia to the Bering Strait. The SS Chelyuskin was caught in icefields and sunk - the crew escaped onto the ice and were rescued two months later by plane. The evacuation was considered a great military achievement, the pilots involved becoming highly decorated heroes. Otto Yulievich Schmidt was the head of the SS Chelyuskin expedition; Ilya Leonidovich Baevsky was Deputy Head of the Expedition for Science; Lev Zakharovich Mekhlis was a prominent officer in the Red Army from 1937 to 1940. This book features portraits of key figures involved in the SS Chelyuskin expedition and subsequent rescue mission, a fold out map showing the evacuation route, and detailed accounts of the event. Hardback. Published by Pravda. Fair condition, no dust jacket, wearing on the cover, part of blank back page is cut out, minor tears, creasing, browning, staining.
